The first ever FinTech National Network Symposium took place on Thursday 10th October at the University of Strathclyde’s impressive Technology & Innovation Centre. Guests from up and down the country, representing a snapshot of the National FinTech landscape, joined us in Glasgow.

Chris Sier, HM Treasury FinTech Envoy and Chair of FinTech North, and Stephen Ingledew, Chief Executive of FinTech Scotland, welcomed a sold-out auditorium. Stephen outlined the purpose of the event; to shine a spotlight on the FinTech activity happening across the UK in the various regional ecosystems. Chris shared his perspective on the importance of the different regions in the UK working together for the greater good, saying “we need to ensure the UK plays nicely together, collaboration is key”.

This November, a delegation expected to include 20+ European FinTech scale-ups (primarily form the Nordic and Baltic region) will visit Manchester and Leeds where they will have the opportunity to understand the wealth of opportunities available in the Northern Powerhouse.

The delegation is being organised by the Department of International Trade (DIT) and will connect with the local FinTech and Financial Services economy at two special FinTech North showcase events. Visiting FinTechs and locally based banks, building societies, tech companies and other financial organisations will have a chance to take part in a ‘reverse pitch’ showcase to up to 150 guests. The visiting firms will pitch their propositions and the kind of partnerships they are looking to develop to support their growth in the UK FinTech market, while the UK organisations will have the opportunity to outline some fo the challenges and opportunities they are looking for FinTech solutions to help them solve.

Open Banking forces the largest UK banks to open up their data in a secure standardised form so that it can be shared by organisations online, which could mean big changes for the way we use money. When combined with the impact of PSD2, there are major changes sweeping through the financial sector and we will discuss the current and future state of play at this event.
