UK-based food wholesaler JJ Foodservice has rolled out in-branch Open Banking payments, following the introduction of an online Pay by Bank feature via a partnership with Ecospend in 2022, which has since been acquired by Trustly.

In doing so, it has become the first UK wholesaler to offer Open Banking for both online and in-branch payments.

By transitioning to Open Banking payments, which enable customers to pay directly from their bank accounts, bypassing card transaction charges, JJ Foodservice has made annual savings of more than £1 million.

In addition, more than 55% of JJ Foodservice customers now Pay by Bank.

In-branch payments initially launched at JJ Foodservice’s new Wimbledon branch in London, and were recently introduced at its headquarters in Enfield.

JJ Foodservice intends to extend the in-branch Pay by Bank service to all 10 remaining branches.

“We’re all about making things easy and affordable for our independent restaurant customers,” said Mick Dudley, chief technology officer at JJ Foodservice.

“Pay by Bank gives them a cost-effective way to pay, which saves us money that we can pass back to them.”

Jussi Lindberg, Trustly’s chief revenue office, added: “Open Banking payments are quickly becoming the preferred payment method, and we’re excited to enhance the checkout experience for JJ’s customers.

“They can now improve conversion rates, make huge savings, and deliver top-quality service.”
